Our coffee & offering

Our house Crowtree roast is dark yet bright which is a rarity amongst specialty coffees. Top quality high altitude arabicas are more commonly light roasted but Darkwood's feel this only tells half their story. By using the cleanest available green coffee they are able to roast darker without bitterness, to develop bold yet defined flavours that match those found in the best quality single estate chocolates. Crow Tree is a rich and intense coffee that suits fans of more traditional styles. Our customers love it!

We use Our Cow Molly milk - this multi award winning Sheffield company deliver within 12 hours of milking ensuring the richest taste and glossiest texture. We have a range of fresh pastries from sheffield legends 4 Eyes Patisserie, along with our ever popular cannoli imported from Sicily.

Our history

We began in 2012 as the brainchild of Neil Midgley and Nick Pears. Both had a love for speciality coffee and kept bumping into each other in Bragazzi‘s on Abbeydale Road. The idea developed into a mobile coffee unit and following a small bank loan for a converted Piaggio Ape we launch on Howard Street.

12 months later Nick got the opportunity to open Steam Yard with Matt Coterill. Neil took sole control and for the next eight years we continued on Howard Street with various amazing and interesting barristas serving up the coffee and daily chats. During that time we discovered Darkwoods amazing Crowtree roast and switched to that.

When Covid struck we moved to Bingham Park in Sheffield, quickly increasing capacity to serve thousands of coffees to people on their lockdown outdoor meet-ups. We loved the pitch so much we stayed and following lockdown expanded (by building a second trailer predominantly from reused materials) and returned to town, this time outside the train station.

In 2023  a third pitch launched in Sheffield Plate food hall in Orchard Square.

Every year we serve more coffee than the year before, and our love of providing great coffee to the people of Sheffield is stronger than ever!
